Rubenesque Dark Garden: Reflecting Pool
Combining mystery, humor and botanicals with Rubens’ handling of the human form....
When I look at this piece, I get a 16th century European-in-American-rainforest feeling, with all the books and movies on that subject as background chorus.
The flowers are a variety of ‘antique’ rose that grow in our yard. The scent they produce can transform a moment in time.

At the beginning of this century I embarked on a quest to learn this Flemish Baroque master’s materials and techniques (it involved a lot of research, and many hours standing very close to his paintings in museums...). The Rubenesque figure I manipulate in this work is taken from one of my paintings, based on his work.
Mirrored symmetries can have a remarkable visual/psychological effect (consider the psychiatric ‘Rorschach Test’). Mirroring an image has a way of making it look like something else entirely.
