Musings....
On the creation of this art:
In a practice I facetiously refer to as “Oneiroplastic Voyaging”:), something vague and nebulous suggests itself and I follow in a trance-like state, not knowing where it will take me. My subconscious plays a leading role in selecting and arranging the fragments that will form a complete image, at times cannibalizing my older artwork. I purposely facilitate this process and I’m often surprised by the result. (I may later discover veiled personal meanings in the images that, like dreams, can be deciphered-evidence of subconscious input.
These images may take on a hallucinatory quality and may appeal equally to emotion and intellect. They may seem to suggest a dramatic narrative, but they defy rational interpretation. I don’t (consciously) “understand” the images while creating them, and I’m usually in no position to “explain” them (although I comment on my work in the galleries). My intention is for viewers to freely interpret these artworks by the light of their own imagination and experience, with no prescribed meaning. I hope they will entertain and reveal aspects of the viewer’s own subconscious.
I don’t have a studio. I work in a small space (my ‘lab’) with a computer, image editing software, a graphic tablet and pen, a digital image library and a digital camera. (It hasn’t always been this way.)
